A CD featuring works for military band written by seven Norwegian composers who lived between 1850 and 1920, performed on period instruments with period orchestration by the Oslo Brigade Orchestra (also known as the "Oslo Brigademusikk") under the direction of Jan Eriksen.
Most of the composers whose works feature here came of age as musicians in the army of Norway, though others represented in this compilation were already established figures in the world of theatrical- and salon music. Almost all of them are virtually unknown outside of Scandinavia.
This CD's selections, including some celebrating the erstwhile union between Norway and Sweden, some the return of a polar expedition and others a cavalcade of other, similarly "peaceful" events, offer a rare glimpse into an unjustly neglected area of European military musical history.
The album is accompanied by a sixteen page booklet with notes in English and Norwegian.
